Sewing with a Purpose

So... we're already halfway through January and I'm somewhat ashamed to admit that I have yet to completely finish a project. I have about 4 UFO (if you count the patterns that I've already laid out and pinned). The project from my sewing class has long since fallen to the wayside... it's too big and I plan on sitting down one day and turning it into a sleeveless tunic.

Another project, the Laura Dress by Burdastyle, needs one more seam and to be hemmed and it would be all done. *Sigh* I don't know what's wrong with me.

Despite the fact that I'm not actually finishing any projects, my fabric stash is growing exponentially. In a little over a month I have managed to fill a 10 gallon container with fabric. Ok, it's actually stuffed full and I have fabric stacked on the lid. This could become a bit of a problem.

I was looking through my stash last night and realized that nothing matches. It took me forever to come up with possible combinations that would work together to make a complete outfit. That reminded me of the Fall 07 edition of Sew Stylish magazine so I flipped through it until I found the "Think Like a Designer" article. I'm going to try really hard to apply some of the principles from that article to my future purchases.

Since I may have to switch jobs fairly soon and my current employer doesn't really have a dress code (we can wear jeans every day) it makes since to work on a professional wardrobe. Here in Florida the dress code is usually business casual so it should be fairly easy. I looked through the patterns that I have and came up with The Workplace Fashionista Collection. I want to create the basics (2 skirts, 2 pairs of pants, and a blouser or jacket) in black, navy, and dark brown. And then make various blouses and tops to match. I also threw a few dresses and coats in as well.

After I finished working out a plan (and only then) did I venture out to Jo-ann where they are having a 50% off all red tag fabrics. I got some really great deals and think I'll be off to a good start once I begin working on the new collection.

But first things first, I am going to finish the Laura in dark denim. And since I'll need a cute top to go underneath, BWOF 1/08 #108. Here's a pic of my inspiration:
